Keeping up with what matters

Jul 14, 2026

One of the greatest sources of stress in modern life may be the nagging feeling that we are falling behind. There is always a new technology to understand, another software update to install, a new artificial intelligence tool to learn, or another change taking place at work. Organizations restructure. Jobs disappear and new ones emerge. Skills that were valuable a decade ago suddenly seem outdated. Meanwhile, social media provides an endless stream of people who appear to be accomplishing more, earning more, traveling more, and living better than we are.

It can feel as though the entire world is accelerating, and so we try to accelerate with it. We work harder, consume more information, check our phones more often, and worry about our careers, finances, families, health, and future. We convince ourselves that if we can just keep up with everything, we will eventually arrive at some place where life feels secure and under control. But that place never seems to come.

To me the answer is not to keep up with everything. To me the answer is to become much more intentional about deciding what is worth keeping up with.

The older I get, the more I believe that a good life rests on 4 essentials. We need people to love and relationships worth investing in. We need enough financial security to create freedom and reduce unnecessary worry. We need to care for our bodies and minds, so we have the health and energy to enjoy the years we are given. And we need a sense of purpose - a reason to get up in the morning and believe our lives and work matter.

Relationships. Financial security. Health. Purpose.

The world around us will continue to change. But we can control whether we invest time in the people we love. We can live within our means and make thoughtful decisions about our financial future. We can exercise, eat well, get enough sleep, and care for our physical and mental health. And we can consider why we are here, what gifts we have been given, and how we might use them in service to others.

I believe these are the things we should worry about falling behind on.

Progress in these areas requires discipline and intentionality. Strong relationships are built one conversation at a time. Financial security is created one good decision at a time. Health is sustained one workout, one meal, and one good night's sleep at a time. Purpose is honored through the small choices we make about how we spend our days.

None of this means we should ignore change. We should remain curious, learn new technologies, develop new skills, and adapt to the world around us. Growth requires us to evolve. We do not need to master everything, chase every trend, or compare our progress with everyone around us. We simply need to remain engaged with a changing world while staying grounded in the things that have impact our lives meaningfully.

To me a good response to a world moving faster is to simply know where we are going and why we want to go there. Relationships, finances, health, and purpose.

So, ask yourself: Am I investing enough time in the people who matter most? Am I making decisions today that will strengthen my financial future? Am I caring for my health as though I will need this body for many years to come? Do I understand my purpose, and does the way I spend my time reflect it? Most importantly, am I measuring my life against what truly matters, or against the constantly changing world around me?

Invest in the people you love. Build financial security. Protect your health. Honor your purpose. Make a little progress in each area every day. Do that, and I suspect the rest of your life will have a remarkable way of falling into place. And somewhere along the journey, when you are no longer chasing it quite so hard, happiness will find you.
